Glossop is a market town within the borough of High Peak in Derbyshire. It lies on the Glossop Brook a tributary of the River Etherow about 15 miles east of the City of Manchester.
The first mills in Glossop were woollen mills but by the mid 1800's there were also many cotton mills. The decline at these industries resulted in the closure of the mills and in 1925 the Howard family sold the Glossop estate and donated large areas to the people of Glossop including Manor Park.
